I have been thinking about this for months (maybe even years). The ultimate feature I was looking for in a school was an immersion program. Even though I speak Portuguese, we are in California, and everyone here speaks Spanish. Also, as Pablo is Guatemalan, we really wanted him to start speaking Spanish as soon as possible.
We had been researching schools, asking around, talking to other parents and interviewing the school we thought would be a good fit. We did all the paperwork and doctors visits and finally got the letter that Pablo was accepted (after a summer of no information, including visiting the staffless school during the summer time). Then we began the worry of whether this was going to be a good fit for him or not. The school is a charter school, which is becoming more and more popular here with the erosion of the funding for the public schools. The program includes 50% English and 50% Spanish. We decided we would try this school for Pablo's kindergarten.
This week was his first week. It was so cool to watch him walk off with the rest of the class Monday morning. He came home saying he liked school and was already singing nursery rhymes and counting to 10 in Spanish. Everyday he brought home some different work.
